My Nature’s Delight Raw Vegan Cafe – Winter Haven, Fl

Unfortunately, both of our phones were so dead they wouldn’t even stay on at this point, so we weren’t able to snap up any pictures of food. I tried to get Thomas to draw the dishes out for you, but he had a few other things going on this week, so I will have to give you a picture free post for now.

We started our long weekend off last Friday by heading up to Winter Haven. For those of you who aren’t sure exactly where that is, it’s about an hour west of Orlando. Winter Haven is one of those towns in the central part of Florida where the South truly begins. (South Florida is New York south, as far as people go.) And along with being friendly, and having a little drawl on their words, the inhabitants of this town are typically of the meat loving, southern food eating variety. So imagine my surprise when a happycow.net search pulled up a raw vegan cafe!

I had done searches in the area before, but this had never come up, so I was excited to go check it out. (Maybe it was recently added?) When I asked Thomas if he knew the location, he said, “Oh yeah, it’s by the barbeque place.” Which was sort of funny to me, because I think there are a lot of barbeque places in this area. It was really hard to tell by their website what kind of food they offered, and when we got there, there was woman in the cafe area asking for italian ice.

My Nature’s Delight Raw Vegan cafe has a good amount of seating, and the large space is divided up into cafe/nutrition store/grocery. They had a daily special posted and a sign for italian ice, but I still wasn’t sure what kind of food we could get, because I didn’t see a kitchen, as it’s hidden behind an office door. Then the server brought us a couple of menus. The raw vegan cafe is a bit of a misnomer, as they had a good selection of both raw & regular vegan items. I ordered a raw pizza and Thomas got a veggie burger. We also ordered guacamole and chips, but sadly, their avocados weren’t ripe enough, so they let us know they couldn’t do it.

Thomas said his burger was good. It came very plainly served on sliced, multigrain bread, with lettuce, tomato, veganaise, and he thinks there may have been a pickle. Also, a good amount of round, corn tortilla chips scattered around the perimeter of the plate.

My raw pizza was awesome! It was a large square of dehydrated onion? bread, cut down the middle to make two large triangles. It had a thin layer of raw hummus, and was covered in lots and lots of finely chopped greens (which I  was craving so badly!). Anything else that was on it escapes my memory (see lack of photos) but there may have been tomatoes. It was served with a generous portion of dehydrated slices of starfruit surrounding it, that made a lovely complement to the pizza. So much so that I kept adding them to all my pizza bites. SO good. I kept talking about it all day.

After eating we did a little shopping. The grocery and freezer section is crammed full of all kinds of vegan food & treats, some of which I had never even seen before, and that my WF does not carry. I talked to the owner, and she was super nice. Apparently they’ve been in this location since 1992, and have just kept expanding over the years. If you’re in the area this is definitely THE place to check out.

So in case you’ve been wondering where the heck I’ve been, I will tell you! We’ve spent the last two weekends in central Florida. The previous weekend we were in Clearwater and Palm Harbor, visiting Kass, and we spent this past weekend in Winter Haven and Orlando.

I was thrilled when a happycow.net search turned out a place for us to go and get some Sunday brunch. Consciousness-Blossoms had me at vegan pancakes. (I love happy cow. I even have the app on my phone!) This place is vegetarian, but has plenty of vegan goodness to go around.

The sign is easy to spot; a good thing in a strip mall location.


They have a section of books and cards with a spiritual theme.

The women all wear saris and it's very, very pastel.

There is a little bit of seating outside too, but this place got slammed shortly after we got there. The counter filled up, and people were waiting for tables in no time!

Kassidy's tofu scramble with potatoes, toast and a side of hummus. The tofu scramble was well seasoned, just a little greasy. The potatoes were delicious, and we really liked the hummus. It had an unusual taste in there that we couldn't figure out, but we liked it a whole bunch.

I think it’s because I was waiting for my tempeh reuben to come out. I ordered the “one large pancake” with bananas and walnuts, but it wasn’t until I dug in that I found out where they were hiding the bananas and walnuts. It was truly spectacular, and very big, and the sweet, cooked bananas contrasted ever so nicely with the crunch of walnuts.

When my reuben came out, I could tell that even though I had requested it vegan it was covered in melty swiss cheese, and the waitress confirmed it, so back it went. After I finished my pancake I was pretty full, but I felt bad cancelling it at that point, so we waited. At this point the restaurant was in full swing, with quite a number of people waiting for tables. Then my reuben arrived…

I wasn’t crazy about the reuben at this point, but that’s probably because I was already full, and because it came after we were all done eating. I also think I’m kind of over vegan cheese, but oh well, the last part’s not their fault. I scraped the vegan cheese aside, and picked at the sandwich until most of it magically disappeared.

I also got one of their carob bliss balls to go (not pictured) which was a delicious, mostly raw snack for the ride home.

Impression:

If you’re in the area, this place is definitely worth checking out! There’s plenty to try, and it’s fairly easy to tell which are going to be the heavier dishes if you don’t want something greasy. Consciousness-Blossoms is located at 3390 Tampa Rd, Palm Harbor, Telephone 727-789-1931

Greenwave Cafe – Plantation, Fl

We finally got to try Greenwave Cafe! I’ve had a friend telling me for years that I needed to go, but it was especially nice since we’ve eating mostly raw. At some point they expanded their hours too, to include dinner, making it more accessible for us.

Since we started the high raw eating during the week, weekends are our whatever we feel like eating time. After having pizza & breadsticks for dinner Friday night, and leftovers for brunch on Saturday, I was ready to eat something a little fresher. We were kind of already in the area since I made Thomas go with me to the Le Creuset outlet (I was good! didn’t buy anything!), but by the time we got there I was a little carsick and pretty famished. It was quite busy and all the tables seemed to be full when we arrived, but then some people waiting for pick-up orders got up, and we were able to get a table pretty quickly.

I explained my “I just need to eat something, quick” situation to the gentleman that came to our table, and he said he knew just what I meant. He asked if we would like soup or salad, because he could get us those right away, and soup or salad comes with all the entrees. Once he told us the soup was curried butternut squash, we were sold.

This restaurant is all raw vegan, so I was expecting cold soup, but this soup came surprisingly warm, and was SO DELICIOUS! It was creamy and spicy and ended way too soon. We speculated that I  might be able to make a similar soup in my Vitamix and just let it get warmed to a not too high temperature like this one. (Raw food is generally food that is not cooked/warmed over 115-120*F, for those not in the know.)

PS-I read in one of my books that you can heat soups on the stove over low heat using your finger as a thermometer to not let it get too hot.

For dinner we decided to order the burrito and vegan cheese burger, and split them. The cheese burger came with some unfortunate mushrooms on top (fortunate for Thomas), and were scraped onto a certain fungi loving boy’s plate. (But I still got a little itchy later after eating my half, but no hives!) I guess I should really remember to ask if things come with mushrooms. I always forget about them if they’re not listed because they’re so out of my conscious thoughts.

Thomas & I thought both of the dishes were really good, but we both thought the burrito was the better dish. It was just SUPER tasty. The cheeseburger came served on their “famous” raw onion bread, which I bought a package of before we left. The burger was slighty sweet, but they assured me there weren’t any additional ‘shrooms in the patty.

Thomas & I are admittedly pumpkin fans, so when we saw pumpkin ice cream listed on the wall of desserts, we both knew we had to order it. I also ordered a slice of chocolate banana pie, in case that wasn’t enough. ;) Of course we LOVED the pumpkin ice cream and further discussed how I could recreate it at home. It definitely tasted like pumpkin, almonds?, and spices, so I’ll be testing some ideas out. The chocolate banana pie came sprinkled with coconut flakes (which Thomas doesn’t like, so I scraped some off sections for him) but couldn’t compete with it’s icy, orange hued sister.

After this we were pretty full. We only ate half the pie, and barely finished the ice cream. Which was surprising, because we didn’t feel that full after the dinner courses, but I guess it caught up to us. That’s been the most surprising thing all and all about eating this way… how full you can get on seemingly light meals.

Greenwave Cafe is a casual restaurant, with a well priced menu and friendly staff, and they will certainly be getting a lot more business from us. They’re open 11:00 am – 9 pm Tuesday – Saturday, and host an Organic Indoor Farmers Market 8 am – 2 pm on Mondays (Cafe Closed on Monday & Sunday). Mellow Mushroom’s vegan pizza makes me happy!

Just showing off some of the awesome pizza we ate last night. I wasn’t in the mood to cook and decided we should go to MM, even though we have no business going out to eat right now. We’re broke and trying to move out of state. Oh well. It was SO GOOD.

Me: Okay, we’ll split a large pizza. No beer. No appetizers. Just pizza. We can drink good beer at home for free! : )

This pizza was a tomato sauce base w/ Daiya cheese, caramelized onions, sun dried tomatoes & jerk tofu. Mmm! Too bad there aren’t any Mellow Mushrooms in Seattle! In the meantime, we have to take advantage of the deliciousness.

Thomas & Ty take Seattle

So with all the holiday rush and traveling we’ve been doing I didn’t really get to tell you about our trip to Seattle. Instead of making separate posts, I’ll just include everything in this one, and try to keep it concise for the sake of brevity.

So we stayed at the Maxwell Hotel in lower Queen Anne. It was really, really close to the space needle and sci-fi museum, and also only one building away from Bamboo Garden, an all vegan (except the fortune cookies have eggs!) chinese restaurant. (Behind the blue building.)

The first place we went to eat was Bang, Bang Cafe. It’s a cute little breakfast and lunch place in Belltown that has vegan options & Mighty-O Donuts (all vegan), as well as incredibly tasty vegan mac n cheese that even omnis rave about on yelp. I had a VBLT, which was terrific, and Thomas & I split a scoop of the mac n cheese and a cinnamon & sugar doughnut that we got for half price. (day old!) Since the doughnut was so good & cheap, we grabbed two more to eat with our morning beverages in the hotel. Mmm!

Then we headed down to the Pike Place Market and did some window shopping. I also picked up a wreath of hot peppers (not pictured) for my dad from the market, from Alvarez farms.

Then we met up with Anthony, Karen and Edgar, and headed over to Plum Bistro for happy hour. Unfortunately, Thomas & I were still full from lunch since it was early, but we had some tasty beers. Afterwards we hit up the Elliot Bay Book company and a record shop, and managed to work up an appetite just in time to miss the happy hour pricing for our dinner! I couldn’t take any pictures because my phone was dying, but we took some bad ones in a hurry with Thomas’ phone. We split a salad and ordered burgers since we were trying to be somewhat frugal. It was good, and it was expensive.

Then Thomas & I walked the entire distance of Capitol Hill, through downtown, and back up towards Queen Anne. We both took night time shots of the space needle. This is mine. Thomas’ was way better.

I thought it was pretty cool that a lot of places there had not only recycling next the to garbage cans, but also composting! This was at one of the MANY Starbuck’s.

Saturday we got dressed up and decided to try to get into Seattle’s member’s only goth club. However after waiting for the bus twice, and seeing the time, we decided it’d just be easier to hang out at a bar close by. By chance we found a bar with the best array of kareoke music that suited our taste. Consequently I sang 3 songs. That’s a record for me. And we drank a lot of Blue Moon.

Unfortunately the combination of eating dinner WAY early and drinking beer way late did not agree that well with my stomach. So Sunday brunch was in bed with takeout from said Bamboo Garden that was right by our hotel. Turns out it was really tasty, and the mongolian beef was incredible!

Later we met up with my dear friend Kat, whom I hadn’t seen for about 15 years. We met up with her at Teapot Vegetarian House Restaurant (all vegan). Since I ate lunch so late, I just had some ginger tea, and tried Kat & Thomas’ dishes, which were pretty yummy. (Below.)

I wanted to check out Remedy Teas (downstairs) and found that they had vegan baked goods. I decided to go with some simple and delicious, thick sliced mulit-grain toast and vegan butter. (PS- They have 150 teas!) We also got a couple of goodies to go, which proved to be yummy.

After this we walked through Capitol Hill again, and stopped by the Elysian Brewing Company and had a couple of beers. Then we took our final stroll through the downtown area before heading back to our hotel to sleep before we headed out in the morning.

Raphsodic Bakery – Orlando, Fl

I decided to put both Orlando vegan food posts back to back so you can see that I do in fact give praise where praise is do… and that would definitely be at Raphsodic Bakery! This place is ALL VEGAN and all awesome. :)

We missed it on the first go, but found it after the U-turn!

Where to begin?! We had already gotten on I-4 to leave Orlando when I decided to give my HappyCow phone app a quick check. I was super hungry and wanted breakfast, and it was just after 11am. That’s when I found Raphsodic Bakery, and according to the website, they had biscuits! Turns out it was pretty close to where we had just left from, near downtown Orlando. I was going to hold out until we got further south for Darbster lunch, but then Thomas reminded me that they’re closed on Mondays! So we turned the car around and headed to the bakery, and I’m so glad we did!

Unfortunately there were no fresh biscuits available for purchase that day. The boy at the counter explained that they had some from the day before in the back that were going to make it to one of their “Yesterday’s Box”s. I asked for the least sweet item, and picked up a blueberry scone. We also selected a biscotti and a piece of apple pie to share. This landed us in the ball park of $11. I noticed that there was an extremely generous box of day old goodies marked for only $12 or $13, but I wanted to try the fresh stuff so I could give you an accurate review. (PS – If their day old baked goods don’t sell in the store, they donate whatever’s left!) So off to the table we went with our mismatched plates to get into some yummies.

We both agreed the almond biscotti was pretty awesome. The scone was subtly sweet as promised and perfectly delicious. I had to try hard not to eat the whole thing! The apple pie was a little different than the usual texture when it came to the filling. Instead of big, jelled pieces of apple it was a finer texture of well spiced, tiny pieces of apple that weren’t overcooked, so it gave it a surprisingly welcome fresh taste.

Having sampled the goods and spotted a section of teas in the back, I asked Thomas what he thought about taking home one of those “Yesterday’s Box”es. He assured me that he could eat his way through it. I headed back to the counter, smiling, but the dude behind it didn’t seem surprised. I asked him if they had herbal teas, and he showed me their vast assortment of both caffeinated and not. I picked out a really nice herbal chai blend that he had bagged himself. It smelled so good that I left the tea cup in the car for days. On purpose. ; ) I also got him to throw some of their day old biscuits in with the box! YAY! And of course I sampled them on the way home. Though he was right, they were better slightly reheated at home because of their age, but still really tasty. They were cheesy herb biscuits, and I could have eaten a whole box of just that.

Our box was so heavy and full! There were tons of cupcakes in there, sugar cookies, biscotti and sugar cookie “sammies”. Unfortunately we didn’t get to eat all of it while it was still really fresh due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but I can tell you that it was all really good. In fact, out of that whole huge box, the only thing we weren’t crazy about were the “sammies”. It was just way too sweet on sweet. I took two to work that Tuesday, and Thomas ate one at home, and we all agreed even though our taste tests were independent. The icing was just way too sugary with that cookie. The cookies by themselves were almost caramelly and complex. Really everything else was fantastic. The lemon frosted candied ginger cupcake that I had later that day?! Um, pretty much blew my mind. The fruit topped one was good, others in there were carrot cake, vanilla (?), peanut butter & jelly (?), and a whole bunch of these spicy, chocolate on chocolate numbers. Yah, spicy! I thought the heat was great.

I’m not a big sweets person. You could’ve just handed me a box full of the biscuits and I would’ve been the happiest person in the world, but I will definitely be paying them a visit anytime I’m in O-town!

Loving Hut – Orlando, Fl

Unfortunately, this was the second of disappointing trips to Loving Hut. The first was in New York, right when they had first opened in February 2010. While it wasn’t horrible, it was not good enough to make me want to visit again, especially when there were so many other great vegan restaurants there. When they opened one in Orlando, I assumed it would be more of the same kind of food, and avoided it on my trips there. That is until some of my friends went 2 weeks ago, and came back raving about the food. I think they even went two days in a row!

We happened to have back to back weekends in Orlando for friends’ weddings, and had some time to kill, so we decided to pay Loving Hut in Orlando a visit. It’s fairly close to downtown, right in the Vietnamese district there on Colonial/50. We went on a Sunday afternoon and they were busy setting up for the buffet, which starts at 3pm. Apparently the buffet is a big draw, because some people came in while we were eating that were all upset that it hadn’t yet begun, and left. So maybe we missed out too?

It didn’t occur to me to ask my friends what they had ordered until after we got our food, so we picked a bunch of different sorts of things.

First out were the Vegan Corn Dogs, $4.95, vegan dog with cornmeal.

These were tempura dipped vegan hot dog pieces, contrary to the description that said cornmeal. I was bummed that they weren’t actual corn dogs. They were served with plain ole’ ketchup and mustard. They were okay.

Next up was my Club Sandwich, $7.95, four slices wheat bread, tomato, pickle, lettuce, tofurky ham, ketchup, and vegan mayonnaise.

I just had to have the club sandwich for some reason. This was one strange sandwich. We couldn’t figure out what this extra texture in there was until I pulled one of them apart to discover the secret. Apple slices! Odd. It was a very sweet sandwich overall, from the OVERLOAD of sweet mayo (I like mayo, but the amount was grossing me out), sweet ham, sweet gherkin, and sweet apple. I pulled the apple slices out, and ate them separately. I also did my best to scrape off the crazy thick mayo. It was much better after this, but still not something I would order again, and definitely not what I had in mind.

He figured the best things to order would probably be what seemed to be their specialty, Asian food. I was also really curious to try the BBQ (soy protein, lemongrass, sesame seeds and seasonings, onion garlic and five spice.) Right away he went in for the BBQ, and frowned because it was overcooked and tough. I took a bite too. It sure was tough! The flavors were really good though. The rice was fine, and the spring rolls (rice noodle, vegan ham, tofu, cucumber, salad, potato chips), served with peanut sauce, and were alright. Though they lost what’s so nice about a fresh spring roll by putting all the processed fried stuff in there. The tofu was also overdone, but still tasted okay.

I had also ordered Sesame Sushi, $6.95, cucumber, fried tofu, vegan ham, carrot, rice, sesame, wrapped with seaweed, avocado, as the safe option.   It was kind of like the spring rolls. Just okay, and with a weird combination of stuff. They weren’t rolled very well, and fell apart when you tried to pick them up.

Thomas had pointed out to me that they had flan in the desserts right away, so I couldn’t leave without trying it. I knew it probably wasn’t going to live up to my expectations (I’m Cuban, after all) but had to do it, just in case. Worth mentioning is that I’ve tried to make vegan flan a couple of times and they’ve been miserable fails that were immediately thrown away. So yah.

Vegan Flan, $2.95, soy milk, sugar, coconut milk, silken tofu, vanilla. I was a little confused about the presentation, which turned out to be ice with caramel syrup atop this jiggling mold of soy milk. The ice probably would have tasted better had they not used Orlando tap water (ugh!), but I pushed it away. The flan tasted like congealed vanilla soy milk. Nothing like flan at all. Oh well, I figured as much. At least they got it to hold the shape. Thomas wanted nothing to do with it. The jiggling was too much for him! ; )

Impression: 

This is probably my last trip to Loving Hut. Nothing tasted very fresh, and it was all just sort of okay. I mean, if I was in a place where there were no other place where I could get a decent meal besides LH, I’d probably give them another chance, but that would really be the only scenario. At least this time the infomercialy looped [Supreme Master So and So] TV that they play didn’t show too many animals in slaughterhouses like they did that time in NYC. (I get it, but it’s not very appetizing.) The service at this particular location was exceptionally slow, and most of the time, we were the only people in there. I almost forgot to mention it, but I just went to read the other reviews on HappyCow.net and was reminded!

If you’re in the area, I suggest that you take a look in at some of the other [Vietnamese] places on that street instead. We ate at one of them about a year and a half ago, and it was AMAZING. They had really nice fresh food that was well prepared, a vegetarian menu , and super delicious fake meat. Or you could drive a little further and try your luck at Ethos.

Botero @ Encore, Las Vegas – Chef’s Vegan Tasting Menu

I will start out by saying that I tried to get the scoop on Vegas vegan eats a full week and a half before my trip. @LJPendizzle was super helpful and gave me many insights, including checking out Red Velvet Cafe, which I unfortunately missed. I also came across quarrygirl.com‘s many entries on Vegas food which led me to be the last person to find out [even my mom knew!] that Steve Wynn of the Wynn resort hotels went vegan a while back and made all of the resort restaurants incorporate vegan menus! WHAT?! Yes! Here’s a link to sample menus that @quarrrygirl uploaded to her site. While they’re not current, they give you a basic idea of what’s available.

Since I was on my own for dinner, I decided to go ahead and go all out with Botero’s Chef’s Vegan Tasting Menu. A full 5 course meal for $60. (menu on quarrygirl.com says $55, but no longer.) I called the restaurant to confirm that they were still offering it, and to make my reservation, and they assured me that it was offered every night.

After arriving at the Wynn, I realized Botero is actually located at the Encore, the sister hotel connected to it by a corridor of high-end boutiques. Botero’s staff was wonderful from the moment I entered. I was seated at a table overlooking the perfectly manicured garden and pool area, and the ambience was candle light, curtains, dim, and luxe.

First came the bread, which I was absolutely thrilled by. This is truly one of the things I most miss about eating a vegan diet! Not cheese, not meat, etc… I miss being able to go to a restaurant and get served a beautiful basket of fresh bread! It came with two different types. One of which was like a soft pretzel roll, complete with granules of salt, delicious! The second was a crusty sourdough (I miss you sourdough!) with cranberries. They served it with a ramekin of butter, which they assured me was vegan. (It tasted so much like real butter! Maybe I’ve been doing this so long now that I don’t really remember what real butter tastes like?)

The next course was the Cauliflower Soup, made with soymilk and almonds. The subtle simplicity grows on you spoonful after spoonful. It’s low on salt, but very creamy and lightly seasoned with what I think was nutmeg. There are little bits of cauliflower throughout to give it a little texture, as well as the slivered almonds and herbs it was garnished with. Very good.

Next up was the salad course. The Fall Panzanella Salad described as having apples, pears, and grilled grapes. I was expecting a sweet salad, but the salad that appeared on the wooden plank with it’s lone crouton was quite the contrary. The bitter microgreens and vinaigrette gave it a decidedly sour note. I couldn’t tell which were shaved and which were slivered of the apples and pears, but they were also tart. The occasional grilled grape gave a slight contrast, but I wish there was more of a sweet & sour balance. The single crouton was large, and fresh. Toasty and buttered, but soft in the middle and able to pick up some of the dressing. Not  bad.

The next course was the Quinoa Pasta  described as a spicy gremolata with cashew cream. While it was creamy, it was definitely not spicy. It was a little bitter and a little salty, and not very good. I knew I had two more courses to come, and figured there was no point filling up on the low note, so I pushed it aside and nibbled a little bit more on the tasty bread.

Course four was the Roasted Acorn Squash. It came topped with tofu that had a really nice texture and was subtly seasoned. The squash beneath was served very simply with no discernible seasoning, but it was perfectly decadent just from its own lovely flavor . The pepitas added a smoky note to the dish that worked, but the abundance of bitter microgreens did not. They were just distracting to the central flavors and warmth of the dish, so I pushed them aside, and devoured the rest with gusto.

Throughout my meal, I was studying their regular vegan menu. I noticed that the other of the three dinner entrees was a Gardein chik’n dish. I usually prefer Gardein’s beef to their chicken substitutes, but I’ve had some very good dishes prepared with the latter in restaurants. Initially I was glad they had skipped it on the tasting menu, since I was more interested to see what their chef had created independently, but after the disappointment of the quinoa pasta, and simplicity of the roasted acorn squash dish, I wondered if it may have been a better option?

I also noticed that the dessert not being served was churros. Churros?! With spiced pumpkin dipping sauce?! I was immediately seized with want, but when my dessert arrived, I was placated. The Spiced Pear Crumble came elegantly adorned with a single preserved pear slice atop, and the execution elevated this simple fruit, which is notably not my favorite, due to its gritty texture, to something special. The pear-cider sorbet it was served with was surprisingly rich and provided the perfect contrast to the warm, spiced crumble.

Thoughts: Although there were some nice parts to the menu, I must say, overall, I was slightly disappointed with the food. I was really expecting to be wowed at this caliber of a restaurant. The ambience was nice, the bread was great, and the  service was impeccable, but if I had ordered either of the entrees at the price point they were listed for on the menu, I would have been even more underwhelmed. I realize that this is not a vegan restaurant (actually, it’s a steakhouse!) but I did expect more. While I do appreciate what they’ve done at the Wynn resort so far, I think they still have just a little bit further to go, at least at Botero.

Burger Bar @ Mandalay Place, Las Vegas

So… Believe it or not, I was actually going to skip Burger Bar, even though it was right where I was staying, had a vegan option, and had positive reviews on quarrygirl.com. Why?! While I may be able to tolerate mushrooms a little bit more these days, I’m still chopping them into tiny little pieces and pushing discernable mushroom shapes aside. Mushrooms are just not my thing, and the Vegas Vegan $13, uses two giant portabella caps as the bun. Besides, Jenna gave me the heads up that it was just kind of okay. Essentially it’s a plate of roasted vegetables stacked up in the shape of a burger,  very delicious vegetables, except for the mushrooms of course!

However, Thomas was able to get away for an hour the day of the Latin Grammys (the reason we were in Vegas; He’s a set designer) and it was right there, so went for it. Burger Bar has an immense beer selection of both draft and bottles, craft and popular. So we were pretty happy about that too. :D Here is the link to a small version of their menu.

So here is my pretty little plate. Served with the usual burger fixin’s (pickle was great!) and a generous portion of fries. I swapped sweet potato fries for the “skinny fries”, as everyone had suggested, and they were indeed good, though they got a bit soggy sitting in the paper cone.

When I removed the toothpicks the “burger” it held its shape, but there really isn’t a way good eat that slippery stack with your hands. I pushed one of the caps aside to make it both more bearable to me, and small enough to keep the layers, but get it into bite sized pieces. The roasted veggies were fantastic and helped to mask the portabella well! For the record, I did try to eat some of the straight mushroom cap, and failed. (It’s really a texture thing for me; mushroom’s just make me want to gag.) Oh well!

Verdict: It was tasty, and the fries helped to make it more filling, but it really wasn’t that substantial of a meal; I really hate when I have to eat chips or fries to fill up. If you’re craving an awesome beer and something to nibble on, give Burger Bar a try. I wouldn’t recommend it for dinner though. Well, unless you’re having beer for dinner! The beers are available to go as well, and they even have some 22oz-ers and special editions.

Tacos & Tequila @ Luxor, Las Vegas

For my first meal in Vegas, I wanted to stay close to the Mandalay Bay. I went with Jenna‘s suggestion of heading over to the Luxor’s mexican spot for veggie tacos [that could be veganized], Tacos & Tequila or T&T. There’s something that’s sort of eerie to me about being in that mostly unadorned pale pyramid, but you forget that when you enter T & T. The vibe in there is a bit more colorful and cheery, especially with the constant stream of classic songs that have been set to techno beats. Let me tell you, I heard the most unlikely songs layered with a dance track… Eye of the Tiger, Hotel California, Pina Colada, Black Hole Sun, the Rolling Stones, Guns n Roses, etc!

They have a $5 happy hour menu that’s a pretty good deal if you just need a snack and want to grab some guacamole and a drink. I however, ordered a mojito and the veggie tacos. When I asked her to hold the dairy (comes with sour cream and crema fresca) she asked if I wanted them “vegan style”. Yes, I said, that would be perfect! : ) Heres the regular menu.

After a while she asked me if I wanted chips & salsa. Really, she forgot and was getting some for the newest additions to the bar, but oh well. This particular bartender seemed to barely have her head above water the whole time. She was apologizing to everyone. I’m gonna go ahead and just assume she was new. The other girl was on top of her game. They serve the chips with a red & green salsa. Both taste like roasted tomatoes, and neither one was spicy, too bad about that.

And here are my “Vegan Style” Tacos Vegetarianos, $13, Grilled zucchini, corn tortilla, mushroom, corn, chile poblano rajas, [sans] crema fresca

These were super delicious. It was a really nice combination of flavors from the roasted veggies, and I dumped the beans and rice into the tacos too, and ate two of them as soft tostadas. They tasted great with a squeeze of lime (wedges provided) and some of the roasted tomato salsas. The tacos are actually really tiny and the serving sizes are lunch appropriate, but I still left full and happy. So if you’re hungry, make sure you get the chips and salsa too!

Tacos & Tequila is located one level up from the casino, where the BODIES exhibit and Carrot Top’s comedy theatre is. Open daily 11AM – 11PM. Happy Hour is Monday – Friday from 2:00 – 6:00 pm.
